Just because you’re not running for office doesn’t mean your ads aren’t political…
Why should you care?
Because if Google or Bing thinks you’re crossing political ad lines (even by accident), they’ll yank your ads, burn your money, and maybe even shut down your account. 💸💀
Let’s fix that.
🎯 What Counts as a “Political Ad” on Google & Bing?
Spoiler alert: It’s not just candidate campaigns.
Political ads include anything that mentions:
- 🗳️ Candidates, elections, or political parties
- 📜 Ballot initiatives, laws, or referendums
- 🔥 Hot-button issues like:
- Gun control
- Climate change
- Immigration
- Health care
- Taxes
- Education
So if you’re selling eco-friendly straws, firearm gear, or t-shirts with phrases like “Taxation Is Theft”—guess what? You might be a political advertiser. 🎯
🛡️ Google’s Rules (a.k.a. The Compliance Gauntlet)
Here’s what Google expects:
✅ Political advertiser verification
✅ “Paid for by…” disclaimers
✅ Geo-targeting to the country you’re verified in
✅ Obey local election laws
If your ad triggers any political flags and you’re not verified?
🚫 Your ad won’t run. Period.
Oh—and Google’s bots are nosy. They’ll scan your:
- Ad copy
- Landing pages
- URLs
- Even your brand name
Welcome to the political ad Hunger Games. 😤
🤖 Microsoft Ads (Bing): Slightly Kinder, Still Dangerous
Microsoft (Bing) isn’t too far behind:
- ✅ U.S. advertisers must verify identity
- ✅ “Paid for by” disclaimers are required
- ✅ They also publish your ads in a transparency report
Historically, Microsoft’s been a bit more lenient for ecommerce—but don’t get cozy. Every election year, enforcement tightens like spandex at Thanksgiving. 🦃
💥 Real Talk: Why Ecommerce Sellers Should Care
“But Andy, I sell bath bombs!” 🛁
Yeah? You ever label one “Regulate This”?
Boom. Flagged.
Here’s why this matters:
- 🔍 Machine-Learning Flagging: Google’s bots will tag you just for mentioning controversial phrases.
- 🚫 Ad Disapprovals: One misstep, and your ads go dark. Do it too often? Say hello to account suspensions.
- 💸 Wasted Spend: Ads that don’t run = Money flushed down the PPC toilet.
📖 From the Make Each Click Count Playbook
One of my favorite lines from the 2022 edition:
“You can’t optimize what doesn’t run. Avoiding policy violations should be Step 0 in every ecommerce campaign.”
Your job? Think like a Google bot:
🤔 What does your ad say?
🕵️ What could it be interpreted as saying?
🌐 Does your landing page hint at politics—even subtly?
And hey—use structured data and Google-approved product categories. Don’t tempt fate.
✅ Your Political Ad Survival Checklist
Worried your ad might raise eyebrows? Here’s your step-by-step:
- Read the Rules
- 📄 Google Ads Political Content Policy
- 📄 Microsoft Political Ads Policy
- Scrub Your Messaging
- Stay away from activist-speak—even if it’s your brand tone.
- Verify Early
- It’s a hassle. But once you’re verified, you’re clear to advertise.
- Spread the Risk
- Diversify to Meta or TikTok—they’ve got rules, but less AI policing (for now).
- Track Disapprovals
- Use conversion tracking and monitor disapprovals. If you don’t know what’s broken, you can’t fix it.
🧠 Big Lesson: Don’t Lose Your Ad Dollars to Dumb Mistakes
Elections are heating up. Ad policies are tightening. And “issue-based” is now a landmine.
Don’t walk blind.
Read the rules. Check your copy. And if you think you’re close to the line—assume you’ve already crossed it.
Because as I always say…
👉 If you’re not making each click count—you’re probably paying for clicks that don’t. 💸
💬 Q&A – Google Ads Political Content Keywords Edition
- Will “eco-friendly” trigger political flags?
Yep—especially if tied to climate change or sustainability. - What about gun accessories?
High chance. You’ll need verification. - Can I use phrases like “freedom” or “liberty”?
Context matters. If tied to taxes, government, or laws—it might get flagged. - Is “End the Fed” a red flag?
Very likely. It’s political speech tied to policy. - What’s a safe workaround?
Focus on product benefits, not ideology. - How long does Google verification take?
Up to 5 days—but longer during election seasons. - Can I appeal disapproved ads?
Yes—via Google Ads Support. But don’t bet your ROI on it.
